Richmond Casino Developers Prepare Public Pitches For Community Hearings

The community hearings for the Richmond casino developers have been scheduled to take place in the coming week. There is another hearing scheduled after the initial one and would most probably take place soon. These hearings would be done on Microsoft Teams.

The Economic Development Department of Richmond explained that through this the esteemed member s of the community would get to know the process and the benefits that would be provided by a resort casino.

Both of these meetings would also be responsible for highlighting how the revenue from these casinos should be used. Also to make sure that there is no negative impact from the Casinos, necessary steps would be discussed.

Casino Pamphlets

Richmond has instructed all of the developers to create single-page pamphlets. These pamphlets would be precise so that the information can be easily understood by people.

The investments that have been proposed for this project are as high as $650 million. Many corporations have submitted their schemes. Some of the major corporations in this list are Bally’s, The Cordish Companies, Urban One, and many other such companies.

The residents of Richmond would get a chance to elect for themselves if they wish the casino resort to be legalized or not. Elections would be carried out for this which would include important details and aspects of the project.
Following the public input meetings, the Richmond Department of Economic Development’s Evaluation Panel will select a winning casino pitch. If a simple majority of Richmond voters back the project, it will be cleared to proceed.

The Economic Struggles Of Richmond

There were a total of 5 cities including Richmond that qualified for the legalization of commercial gaming. The lawmakers of the state and the Governor of Virginia together backed up the idea of opening casinos in cities that were economically distressed. They saw commercial gaming as a means of development.

The casino referendum was signed off by the voters of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Bristol, and Danville. This was sone during the presidential elections. Whereas Richmond was more interested in this project and that is why the city would have to wait another year so that they have the best offer.

A total of more than 20% of people in Richmond are living in poverty. In 2019 the median income in households was $47,250 and was very low in comparison to the national average.

This is the reason why Richmond is in dire need of this project and keeping this in mind the council of the city and Mayor Levar Stoney have extrended theire support for the same.
